It is incredibly important to buy a crib that is comfortable, high quality, and most importantly – safe. Determining your price range and desired features is essential for taking on the daunting task of selecting a crib for your baby.

Types of Cribs

  • Fixed-Side Cribs – A fixed, sturdy, and permanently ‘in-place’. Also referred to as a static or standard crib. These tend to cost a bit less than other types of cribs. The height will vary based upon model, but the standard size measures approx. 54″ x 30″.
  • Convertible Cribs – A popular choice for most parents today. With their unique feature of converting into a toddler bed, day bed, or a partial crib. Many varieties to select from since convertible cribs get you the most crib for the money.
  • Rounded Cribs – Typically designed to save space in the nursery. There are no headboards or footboards which enable the baby to experience 360 degree views from their crib. Usually very cozy and atypical in design with a sphere or oblong shape.
  • Drop-Side Cribs – Commonly known as the most dangerous kind of crib with it’s history of baby related injuries and deaths. Since June of 2011, the CPSC issued a notification that made it illegal to sell, donate, or manufacture in the United States. All parents need to avoid drop side cribs at all costs!

Important Crib Safety Basics

  • Old or Used Cribs – Buying an old or used crib is not recommended. Federal Crib Safety Guidelines went into effect in 1973 – meaning that any crib built before that year is incredibly susceptible to safety hazards and violations. However, any older or used crib could have issues such as splinters, peeling paint, stability problems, and other dangers. It’s best to purchase a brand new crib to ensure safety is of top priority.
  • Drop-Down Style CribsDO NOT USE! As previously mentioned, since 2011 they are now illegal to manufacture, sell, or donate in the United States. According to the CPSC, at least 32 babies died from issues relating to drop down cribs from the year 2000 to 2010.
  • Crib Bumpers – Once viewed as a decorative nursery item, crib bumpers are now frowned upon since they pose a potential hazard to your baby while they are in their crib. There have been cases where bumpers have been linked to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
  • Has Your Crib Been Recalled? – Checking with the CPSC Crib Information Center to see if your crib has been recalled due to any reason is essential to ensure proper safety. They also offer several tips and advice for keeping infants safe.

What Else Will You Need?

  • Crib Mattress – We recommend buying a crib mattress at the same time you purchase your crib. Select one that is firm and brand new.
  • Crib Sheets – Select crib sheets with a tight but comfortable fit.
  • Crib Mattress Protector/Cover – Will keep your crib mattress clean and dry. Often waterproof to protect your investment from spills and accidents.
  • Baby Monitor – Keep an eye on your baby at all times from anywhere throughout the house. Very important safety item to have.
